The
following are brief descriptions of categories
we commonly refer to when speaking about the produce
we sell. These are intended to be general terms
rather than strict definitions. Note that some
categories are more practice oriented and others
are more referential to the product.
Certified
Organic: Grown under a verifiable program
of on-farm inspections, soil tests, and annual
management reviews. Synthetic fertilizers, ripening
agents, fungicides, herbicides and pesticides
are not employed in growing or packing.
Transitional
organic: Grown in compliance with certified
organic standards, but the land has not been out
of conventional production long enough to be certified-generally
3 years.
Integrated
Pest Management (IPM): Based upon a least
is best strategy. IPM emphasizes the use
of natural insect repellents and pest control
methods, utilizing the least amount of insecticide
spray, applied at the most opportune time for
maximum impact. No claims are made regarding the
use of synthetic fertilizers, herbicides and post-harvest
treatments.
